Yet, for many families rising maternity care costs in the United States create significant financial challenges. Expectant parents often ask: How can I afford pregnancy and childbirth without breaking the bank? The average cost of childbirth can be daunting, but there are solutions to ease the burden.

A  2022 study by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) reveals that women who give birth face nearly $19,000 in additional health care expenses over three years. Cesarean deliveries are associated with more than $26,000 in childbirth costs, while vaginal births average over $14,700. These figures include monthly premiums, which according to KFF’s Employer Health Benefits Survey, averaged nearly $2,000 a month for family coverage in 2023.

Out-of-pocket maximums add to the financial burden. These limits vary by insurance plan but often reach or exceed $8,000 for family plans [Link]. Along with restrictive provider networks and surprise medical bills, these costs drive many families to seek alternatives to traditional health insurance for maternity care.

Managing Maternity Costs in Today’s System

Many families choose high-deductible health plans (HDHPs) to lower monthly premiums. However, these plans require a minimum annual deductible of $3,300 for family coverage and a maximum out-of-pocket limit of $16,600 in 2025, according to the IRS. These expenses can strain budgets, especially when combined with pregnancy and childbirth costs.

Government programs like Medicaid cover over 40% of U.S. births, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Eligibility for Medicaid is limited to low-income families, typically those earning less than 138% of the federal poverty level. Medicaid often restricts provider options, which can be a challenge for families who want personalized care or home birth alternatives.

As a result, health sharing programs have grown in popularity. These nonprofit, community-based models allow members to contribute monthly to help share each other’s eligible medical expenses. While some programs offer limited support, such as low maternity caps or long waiting periods, others provide more flexible, family centered solutions.

Zion HealthShare’s Community-Driven Maternity Program

Zion HealthShare gives expectant parents a better way to manage the high average cost of childbirth and pregnancy. Instead of facing complicated insurance plans and expensive monthly premiums, members contribute to a nonprofit community that shares major medical expenses, including maternity needs.

With Zion HealthShare, you won’t be limited to a narrow network of providers. Whether you’re planning a hospital delivery, a birth center experience, or a home birth, you have the freedom to choose the care that fits your family best during childbirth. After a one-time maternity-specific Initial Unshareable Amount (IUA) is met, many maternity-related costs may be eligible for sharing.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_video src=”https://youtu.be/ke6q7kqyylk” _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” box_shadow_style=”preset1″ global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_video][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_image src=”https://zionhealthshare.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/9EC2ABC2-7E55-48C6-8EC2-D4B07AE5C2A9-scaled.png” alt=”Maternity Costs infographic ” title_text=”Maternity Costs Inforgraphic” show_in_lightbox=”on” admin_label=”Image” _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” border_radii=”on|10px|10px|10px|10px” box_shadow_style=”preset1″ global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.3″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”]

What’s Eligible for Sharing Through Zion HealthShare’s Maternity Guidelines?

Once members meet the maternity specific IUA, a broad range of pregnancy and childbirth related expenses may be eligible for sharing. Our community-based approach ensures that members receive the support they need while navigating their maternity journey.

Here's Why Zion HealthShare is a smart choice for maternity care:

Comprehensive Sharing: Zion HealthShare shares in a wide range of maternity-related services, including prenatal checkups, delivery and postnatal care. Eligible expenses may include routine office visits, ultrasounds, lab work, and delivery services; whether you opt for a hospital, birthing center, or even a home birth.

No Network Limitations: One of the advantages of health sharing is the freedom to choose your own providers. Unlike insurance plans with constraints on healthcare provider choices, Zion HealthShare allows flexibility in selecting doctors, specialists, and facilities that align with the members preferences and needs. This flexibility proves valuable during pregnancy, affording the freedom to choose healthcare professionals who support our members' unique journey.

Community Support: With Zion HealthShare, you're not alone in managing your healthcare expenses. Our members share each other's eligible costs, providing peace of mind and financial relief during this significant life event.

Only Three Initial Unshareable Amounts: Each household is only responsible for three IUAs in a rolling 12-month period, and maternity care counts as one of them. While the maternity IUA is a set amount separate from your regular IUA options, once it’s met, Zion HealthShare steps in to pay the rest of all eligible pregnancy and birth-related expenses.

Financial Responsibility and Planning for Maternity Care

A common concern many expectant parents have is how to financially prepare. When considering a health share membership, especially if pregnancy is in your future, there are some important things to know:

One IUA for Maternity Care: Once you've met the IUA for your maternity care, all related costs are eligible for sharing. You won't need to worry about multiple payments for different stages of your pregnancy or delivery. These include prenatal care, postnatal care, and delivery. Please keep in mind, complications related to pre-membership conditions may result in additional IUA's. Zion HealthShare requires opening maternity sharing requests promptly after conception confirmation, but within six (6) months to ensure the request is eligible for sharing.

Waiting Period: Keep in mind, maternity sharing is ineligible during the first six months of membership. To be eligible for sharing, the conception date must occur after six months of continuous membership. Conception dates are confirmed via medical records. Zion HealthShare encourages honesty to avoid membership revocation. If your thinking about expanding your family, now is the time to enroll so your maternity care is eligible for sharing when the time comes.

Newborn Membership: If your newborn isn't part of an eligible maternity request, they can still be added to your household membership. However, their membership start date can be no sooner than seven days after delivery. Any complications at birth may be considered pre-membership conditions subject to waiting periods. For more information on pre-membership medical conditions please visit this link.

For a comprehensive list of services eligible for sharing and details on each category, please visit this link.

Support Throughout Your Journey

Navigating maternity care can be overwhelming, but Zion HealthShare's specialized Maternity Needs Processors are here to assist you every step of the way. This team is dedicated to ensuring your experience is as seamless and stress-free as possible. Here's some examples of how they help:

Assistance with Medical Bills: The team will guide you through the process of submitting bills related to your maternity care, ensuring they're handled efficiently.

Tips for Requesting an Itemized Bill: Understanding what you're being billed for is important.
